Introduction to the International Society
Mon 27. Sep 2010 at 7pm
New King's 6
The International Society is open to students from all countries. We are a fun and friendly group of people who aim to help new international students experience Scottish life, traditions and history, help them settle into their life in Aberdeen and most importantly meet like-minded students from all over the world.

Our programme includes day trips around Scotland as well as weekend trips to haunted castles, the Isle of Skye and many other places. We also organise Ceilidhs (Scottish Dancing - good exercise and lots of fun), weekly film nights, parties and much more.

If there is anything you would particularly like to do or see, let us know or just come along to our committee meeting and help us organise it! We want you to be able to make the most of your time in Scotland.
I'm in my final year of studying Politics & International Relations, and as a serial exchange student myself, it's great to get involved in supporting our international students here at the University of Aberdeen. Having studied at universities in Scotland, the United States, Jordan, Lebanon and high school in Germany, I know that the cultural experience of studying abroad is just as important as the academic one. That's what the International Society is all about! My favourite things about the society have to be our weekend trips around Scotland and enjoying the many parties and events with interesting people from all over of the world!
Hello international folks and those who very simply feel international,
My name is Julia, I am a second-year English and Scottish literature and Scottish Gaelic student at the University of Aberdeen and the International Society’s treasurer. Coming originally from Germany and having done a mixture of European languages, I feel very much at home in Aberdeen with all its multi-lingual students. I nevertheless feel the urge of getting out of the ‘Deen at frequent times not only to explore a bit of Scotland and see the reason why I have come here, but also to clear my mind and get out of university environment. I am thus very happy studying abroad and, most of all, studying here. Had I not had the outrageous idea of studying here, I would have (probably) never had some yummy haggis, nips and tatties, encountered some very gigantic and vicious seagulls or seen the most stunning and awing landscapes in Europe. Tha Alba alainn gu dearbh!
Hej!
I am a 3rd year student studying French and International Relations. My parents are both from Finland but I was born in Belgium and I have lived in South Korea, Poland, and France. I enjoy the society since it gives me an opportunity to discover different parts of Scotland and meet people from all over the world!
Ahh eee oo! You're probably wondering why a studly monkey like me has found my way to the International Society?! Well it all began when I was in a cargo box on a ship from Madagascar to Iceland to be the new star in a zoo. Unfortunately my box fell off the ship whilst crossing the stormy waters of the North Sea. Luckily a wee fisherman from the likes of Aberdeenshire found me and took me home. I was given a good Scottish name and good Scottish clothes, but unfortunately my new parent went to Loch Ness and never returned (eaten by a monster?). But never fear the International Society came to my rescue! They adopted me and I am now the luckiest monkey in the world! I get to go on trips, go to parties and be part of the committee. I get to meet people from all over the world and I look forward to meeting you all! Lots of kisses and bananas, Dunkie
Until my 18th birthday there wasn't much about me that was international; me, my parents and even my grandparents are all from the same city in The Netherlands! But then I caught the travel bug and left to go traveling and turned my gap year in Australia into two gap years... Once back home I only wanted to leave again, so applied for uni in Scotland, and am now in my final year of a Geography & International Relations degree. Since then I've found new ways to go abroad again (study programmes in China, the US and Cyprus), and try to travel as much as I can during the summer, especially to Latin America. However, there are also so many beautiful and exciting places in Scotland, that I'm out exploring the country whenever I get the chance. As a member of this year's committee I can't wait to show you all the wonderful things Scotland has to offer so that hopefully you'll fall in love with Scotland as much as I have!
Hey guys!
I am studying Psychology and Management in second year and I am really enjoying my courses, but student life even more. I am German rather than International, but people keep telling me that living in Scotland for one year has already affected me! I inherited my passion for travelling from my parents, who used to travel with me throughout Europe and beyond since I was a child. I enjoy working in the International Society because it gives me and all you international students the opportunity to explore parts of this sensational country we would never have seen if we were travelling by ourselves. As well as meeting all the interesting people from all over the world, we would never have met if we had not joined this awesome society.

Enjoy your time in Aberdeen!
I'm studying Geoscience at Aberdeen University. One of my parents is British, the other Greek, I was born in Holland and raised in a few different European countries. Very complicated I know!!! My major passion is travelling. Last summer I trekked all over Latin America and this summer I will be travelling to South East Asia, China and Australia. Aberdeen University is one of the most multi-cultural in the UK and joining the International Society will help you meet and make friends with students from all over the world. My role in the Society is Marketing Coordinator. This is a new position and my job will be to bring in sponsorship so we can subsidise the trips and events we offer you. I hope you come and join the society. I have enjoyed it so far and made many great friends from all over the world.
